Most of Oklahoma’s people have had scary experiences with wasps, bees, or yellow jackets. With as many stinging and flying insects as we have, it’s not that big of a surprise. However, stings to the face, eyes, mouth, throat, and neck can be severe and should be reported to a doctor. Swelling of the throat can make it difficult to breathe or swallow and could cause an allergic reaction. Because of these health concerns, having a professional exterminate them is a good idea. Here at Healthy Homes Exterminating, we can eliminate your wasp problem affordably and efficiently in a very short amount of time.
Paper Wasps In Oklahoma
Why are Paper Wasps are called paper wasps? Because they build paper nests into a comb they attach to your home, business, trees, and many other structures. Paper Wasps can vary in color from brown, yellow, black, and red. I have had several bad experiences with the red ones. It has always seemed to me that the red wasps are the more aggressive wasps. There might be twenty to seventy-five wasps to each nest that could attack to defend their colony.
Yellowjackets
I think we all know how aggressive yellow jackets are and how dangerous they can be. This wasp has yellow and black bands around the abdomen and is usually smaller than a paper wasp. The three species of yellowjackets we see here in Oklahoma are the southern yellowjacket, eastern yellowjacket, and the baldfaced hornet. Yellowjackets build significantly larger nests than paper wasps because there is usually a larger colony.
A Yellowjacket colony may have 1,000 to 5,000 adults. That’s a lot of potential pain for anyone that messes with their nest. Usually, they build their nest underground but not always. Sometimes it might be in a tree or on a structure. If you find a problem with yellow jackets, call us for a free estimate, and we can remove them for you.
Can You Die From A Wasp Sting?
The short answer is yes. You can die from a wasp sting. It is estimated that 50 to 100 people die every year from stings. Additionally, it is also estimated that the number could be much higher because the symptoms are the same as a heart attack and may be misdiagnosed. Again I must mention if you are stung in the mouth, face, throat, or neck, you may want to go to the hospital, and with some people, a sting anywhere may become severe. It is estimated that at least 2.5 million Americans have some degree of advanced sensitivity to insect stings.
Bees In Oklahoma
Bees are not something we will ever exterminate, and we recommend that you don’t either. Honey Bees are important for the pollination of crops. Without Bees, we all would be in bad shape, and the bee population is already suffering. We all must do our part in saving bees. To get rid of them, you can call a bee removal service or the Dept of Agriculture for phone numbers of people who can help or call the beekeepers association at 918-409-0163. Please don’t call an exterminator if you have a bee problem; if you find an exterminator killing bees, call the Dept of Agriculture at 405-521-3864.
